"The Challenge We Face."

Dr. Albert Mohler posted on his blog some thoughts regarding the recent upholding of marriage between a man and a women in the state of California.  Below are his remarks.  VERY interesting...

The challenge of defending marriage as the union of a man and a woman was on full public display on November 4. The immediate news was very encouraging indeed. Voters in Arizona, Florida, and California all passed measures defending marriage and prohibiting same-sex marriages in their states. These three states, added to the over twenty others that had already passed similar constitutional amendments or similar provisions, have made a massive public statement in support of marriage.
Without question, that is good news. The vote in California was especially significant, as Proposition 8 allowed the citizens of the nation's most populous state to take the issue back from the state's Supreme Court, which had arrogantly usurped the authority of the people in a 4/3 decision back in May. The 52-48 vote was a clear win for marriage, and a geographical vote distribution chart shows that same-sex marriage has support mainly in the Bay area of San Francisco and neighboring communities. The win in Florida was important because the measure needed 60 percent of the votes in order to pass. It received 62 percent of the votes cast. The Arizona vote was similarly significant -- in this case because that state had been the only state to date to have turned down a similar measure in a previous election.
Nevertheless, legal challenges were quickly filed in California. The most threatening of these asks the California Supreme Court to rule the measure as unconstitutional because it "revises" rather than "amends" the state's constitution. The claim is specious, but so was the argument accepted by the court back in May. This much is clear -- any court that would overrule a mandate from the people in this manner will undermine its own legitimacy.
In other developments, statements from two prominent politicians made news on the issue. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger encouraged same-sex marriage advocates to press ahead. He even expressed hope that the state's Supreme Court would overrule the voice of the people. "It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," Schwarzenegger told CNN. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."
As The Los Angeles Times reported:
Schwarzenegger publicly opposed Proposition 8, which amends the state Constitution to declare that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
On Sunday, he urged backers of gay marriage to follow the lesson he learned as a bodybuilder trying to lift weights that were too heavy for him at first. "I learned that you should never ever give up. . . . They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done ."
What makes this especially interesting is that Schwarzenegger had run for office opposing same-sex marriage. He is not now a candidate for re-election. As the paper observed, "With his favorable comments toward gay marriage, the governor's thinking appears to have evolved on the issue."
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi told The San Francisco Chronicle that voters just have misunderstood the measure. In a stunning demonstration of political condescension, Rep. Pelosi argued: "Unfortunately, I think people thought they were making a statement about what their view of same-sex marriage was . . . . I don't know if it was clear that this meant that we are amending the Constitution to diminish freedom in our state." If anything, the wording of the proposition, controversial in itself, makes the Speaker's point even more ludicrous. Is she seriously suggesting that the voters of her home state cannot be taken seriously when they defend marriage? It appears so.
In yet other developments, protesters marched in front of the Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and across the street from Saddleback Community Church. The Mormon church was the largest single financial contributor to the fight for Proposition 8, and major Evangelical churches were behind the effort as well, joined by many Roman Catholics.
On the other hand, as reported in The Los Angeles Times:
"We will continue to bless same-sex unions here until we can legally celebrate same-sex unions again," the Rev. Ed Bacon told 1,000 congregants during Sunday services at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, which has blessed same-sex unions for 16 years.
After the service, Bacon and other clergy members held a news conference on the church steps. They were surrounded by gay and lesbian couples, some standing with young children.
"I know these couples. I know their relationships," Bacon said, addressing a phalanx of television cameras. "They should be celebrated, rather than disparaged. . . . In the eyes of God, these people are married."
This struggle isn't over -- not even close.

Post-Election Thoughts.

This is not going to be politically focused, rather I hope it is biblically focused in the realm of politics.  There is a difference!  And I will be throwing in some sociological issues as well.  I want this to be an honest out-pouring of my love for God and his bride, the Church.
I was not surprised by the election results just hours ago.  In fact, McCain would have lost if he were running against a tree.  Reason?  Change.  People wanted change.  Barack Obama said over and over that he would be the guy to bring change.  McCain had 8 years of Bush hanging over his head which did not help him at all.  People got sick of the war in Iraq, sick of gas prices and most assuredly sick of the apparent 'crumbling' of the economy.  Most would agree on those issues and America spoke just three days ago.

But what are we to make of Barack Obama?  He has confessed his Christian faith while remaining one of the most liberal senators out there.  Are they compatible?  Is signing the Freedom of Choice Act a Christian value?  No.  But this isn't where I'm going (anyone who has read this blog before knows my passion for the abortion issue).  Those things are important and I do think that this Act would be a HUGE step in the wrong direction for Abortion, but, 3 nights ago...

Barack Obama made history.  He is the first Black President to be elected in the United States of America.  Amazing.  While I wish he were Republican, I can still have a voice.  I told some of my friends at work the other day that while I pretty much disagree with everything Obama has ever said, I can respect my new President on not only this historical level, but a biblical level as well.  (Romans 13:1).  Which leads me to my next point.

Theology.  I've seen many a people act like the world has crumbled and America is now going straight to hell.  Not true.  God doesn't send countries to hell; he sends unregenerate sinners to hell (to be precise, they send themselves to hell).  Some people have said that God now hates America and is punishing her for electing Obama.  Doubtful that God hates America, but Obama could be judgment, I'll give you that much.  But we don't know because we're not God, nor do we make that call as if God was a Republican.  Art Boulet posted some of his thoughts here as he evaluated some other people's remarks as well.  He noted, and I will stress as well, that God is not only in control of the ends, he's in control of the means as well.  God purposed this and now we must continue to be the church, preach the Gospel, take care of the orphans and live as salt and light.  Easy enough right?

I will be praying for Barack Obama.  Working in Philadelphia has exposed me to the African-American and Urban culture and you better believe that Philly celebrated like it was another Phillies World Series victory.  It was a historic moment and I pray that racial relationships will be healed, as I often see the tension and pain in the city.  I also pray that Obama supporters will not worship this man as if he were a messiah.  I saw a lot of excitement in Philly, but it makes me nervous when people put their "faith" in a man.  Somehow through it all, regardless of your political propensity, abortion must be stopped and biblical values need to be restored.  It's time for the church to be The Church.  With America slipping away, it seems, with morality, Christians must get back to the biblical program.  We are still free to preach and proclaim God's message of Salvation, and therefore we must do so.

The bottom line is, it was good that Barack Obama won.  I say this because God willed it to be done and God's will is perfect and always good.  We must learn from this (even if it were McCain-for those who liked McCain) and continue to be about God's Kingdom in this world.  Our focus is not on politics, rather it is on God and the beauty of His Gospel as it goes about in this world.  Christians, let's do it.

Lead For The City

I'm doing my best to try and watch this today and tomorrow (I'm way to busy during the day with a little thing called work), but there is a conference going on in St. Louis called Lead For The City .  It is sponsored by the Acts 29 Network and the Resurgence.  They are doing a free web-cast of the event here and the schedule of the events can be seen here.  Check it out!

Going Camping!

My family and I are going up to Ricketts Glen State Park for a camping trip this weekend.  It'll be fun since we have an 8 month old baby/wanna be big boy with us this time.  Last year we had a blast "roughing it" without electricity, and this year I expect nothing less.  It should be a much needed time of relaxation and worship as we spend the entire weekend outdoors in God's magnificent Creation.  Plus camping is just fun altogether.  See you in a few days!

To the Next President:

I think this speech might shake some people up a bit...why don't you give it?

'My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of the Iraq regime has been completed.
Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short . The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains every one not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. THEN EVERY YEAR THERE AFTER IT'll GO TO OUR SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM SO IT WONT GO BROKE IN 20 YEARS.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine ? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France or maybe China.

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia . Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York.

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. Its president and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple of extra thousand tanks and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put 'em? Yep, border security.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska- which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, 'darn tootin.'

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America . It is time to eliminate homelessness in America .

To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thank you guys. We owe you, and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God bless America .. Thank you and good night.'

Okay, so maybe it's not exactly the best idea, but the underlying principles are accurate.

The Gospel in North Philly

Epiphany Fellowship in North Philadelphia recently had an event called: Concert, Classroom, Corner.  Thousands came by, interacted with the saints from Epiphany, and heard the Gospel loud and clear.  Praise God for breaking through the Urban, Hip-Hop culture in Philadelphia!  Read more from Shai Linne , who performed at the event, here .

An Open Letter...

to whoever reads this.

I'm a little perturbed at some things that I see going on in the world, specifically in America, that is theological in nature (or is at least rooted in theological principles found in Scripture), but is showing up in other places like Politics, Social-Issues, Finances, and the Economy.  I'm not here to be the pajama hadine-type who stays at home in his mother's basement all day eating hot pockets and pizza rolls while blogging about how the world should be. I don't like to particularly critique these things because it then begs the question: What am I doing about it?

For example:  Say I blog about how ridiculous it is that Obama had a $29k per plate dinner/fund-raiser while people in Texas can't even get to their homes to even attempt to clean up the mess left by Hurricane Ike.  What is wrong with saying this?  For one, it's a logical fallacy called ad hominem.  I would be arguing that just because he raised the money this particular way means that he doesn't care about people in Texas, thus attacking his character, and that is wrong.  Catch my point?  I don't want to straw man someone and make them feel guilty just because I think a certain way about a certain subject.

Which brings me to my next point.  The following critique assessment is going to be filtered through a theological lens, based on the objective truth of Scripture (hopefully!), and therefore is in no way meant to manipulate anyone.  I just want to bring this to our attention because it upsets me and I think it upsets God.  The exploitation of the poor is theologically problematic for God and for Christians. While the Church can always do more, we ought not to be always playing the blame game on Jesus' Bride because Christians give the most out of any other organization or group in the world.

The Prophets of the Old Testament Scriptures hold the key to a significant part of the Gospel, namely, repentance.  When Israel (and Judah too) decided that they were going to "go after other gods", the Prophets were sent in to preach.  They preached to the wayward king about repenting and turning back to the LORD.  They preached that the nation would humble themselves and get back on the track to faithfulness to their covenant God.  They mourned over their nation as they continued in idolatry.

This makes me wonder a few things.  Is America heading in this direction?  Are we so theologically numb and Gospel-handicapped to think that God should "...bless America"?  Hasn't He already done so?  Here's what I see going on:

AIG recently had a problem.  We all bailed them out with our tax-paying money.  Why do I bring this up? Because the owners and CEO's of companies like these seem to be corrupt.  There seems to be an underlying-Social-Darwinian-thought process that is essentially greed.  I made the claim, so let me back it up and explain.  One of the CEO's, who has been there less than six months, is making $2.4 million.  WHY? Why are all of these big-whigs who make these billions of dollars making this much?  And how in the world do their companies go belly-up like this?  (On the political front, we had to do this because it would have nearly frozen the world's banking industry),  but why do these people get rich while everyone else suffers?  Why did two of these major CEO's walk away with over $20 million after running their companies into the ground?  Did that money go back to the shareholders and people? Nope.  It didn't.  And theologically, it's exploiting the poor.  But my argument isn't finished.  (Read this link for more).  There is more to this money issue in our society.

The porn industry (during the currently debated 'recession') has not gone away.  People are still sinning and remaining sexually addicted to whatever they can get their hands on (no pun intended).  Each year the porn industry brings in over $10 billion.  That's unbelievable.  In 2002, Comcast brought in $500 million for Adult programming.  Tell me this money can't go elsewhere?  How about we ban pornography (obviously for its theological reasons) and make it illegal?  (I know that is easier said than done, but come on, we have to do something!) That money? Exploiting the poor.

And now we move to professional sports.  Don't get me started.  I don't even need to post links to what these people make every year.  For what? Entertainment? We worship these teams and they do us no good.  Let's put that money somewhere else...why? It's exploiting the poor.

I say all of this because I get sick of people talking about how so-and-so is going to be president because so-and-so is going to change some things.  I don't doubt they will want to change some things, but the problem isn't merely political.  It's a (theologically) moral problem.  These major industries are sucking the tax-paying, hard-earned monies of the people, and exploiting the poor (or, at least what we think is 'poor'). I don't advocate for Socialism, or income redistribution per se, but the middle class is no more because money is floating around in scenarios that are either: 1) morally corrupt or 2) politically corrupt.  Capitalism is doing its job however.  You make money and increase that profit as much as possible, no matter what the cost.  Hmm.

Moral reform is essentially the point of this post.  I could care less for the sporting industry (although I used to as a kid!) I could care less that people "make a living" in the porn industry.  It's evil...so, defeat it.  The top executives in this country are making more in 6-months than I'll ever make in my life. And the abortion issue, that Evangelicals like me continue to use as a guide to presidential voting, has to be dealt with.  Here are some interesting stats:

1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest; 6% of abortions occur because of potential health problems regarding either the mother or child, and 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient).
America needs to wake up. I won't vote for someone who thinks that Roe Vs. Wade needs to remain because we want to protect mothers who are victims of rape and yet only 1% of the abortions that are done actually fit that description.  93% of abortions happen by PURE CHOICE.  That sort of moral-belief in this country is damnable.  You cannot tell me that the 4,000 babies who die every single day isn't an important issue, or that it isn't as important as 'national health care'.  Absolutely ridiculous. Liberals will say: "we don't know exactly when the life of a child begins".  Okay, so rather than playing the 'safe-card', we'll just assume otherwise and continue on our presupposition.  100 years ago, you'd be locked up for being insane.

I plead with Americans: the Gospel is the only thing that is going to matter.  All the money, all the moral-decay and all the corruption is going to fade (or perish in Hell).  I don't want to see this happen! We must repent and trust Christ and if we don't, the slippery slope of sin is going to suck us in.  This is a call to Reform!  This is a call to get back to Scripture!  Get back to the heart of the Gospel.  Please.

And Christians, let us be like the prophets who preached this message!  Let us be like Christ who loved unconditionally.  Let us do what Christ taught, namely, loving thy neighbor.  No corruption can enter the Church or it will kill it.  Let us proclaim the Gospel!

Muslim Faith?

Okay, so tell me this isn't funny. Liberals, I'm just saying...it's interesting.  Hiding something Mr. Obama? I have no idea, but I still think it's funny!

September 11th

Seven years ago today, we saw evil face-to-face.  The hatred of Islamic Extremism is astounding.  At the root of it all, I believe, is religious ideology that is in conflict with the "Judeo-Christian" West.  It's not going to end until Christ says so.  Remember that day 7 years ago.  It changed America.  Pray for our troops who are defending our nation.  Pray that the Gospel spreads and that the hatred inside of Islam is dismembered.

And while we're at it, pray for the Christians in India (Orissa State) who are being persecuted too.

The Political Buzz.

Did you know that this year is an election year? (Grin.)  I don't know how you wouldn't.  Of course, if you have chosen to fast from television, text messaging, the internet, and all forms of communication and conversation, then you might not know that.  But wow...what an exciting time for America.  You have the Democrats who are sick of George Bush, thus lumping all Republicans together (rightfully so I suppose); and the Republicans are tired of the messianic-anti-type figure named Barack Obama who is a borderline socialist looking to fix the world's problems (as if any candidate could do this).  McCain comes out and drops a bomb on America by picking Sarah Palin as his VP. (Which is awesome in my Constitutionally-permitted opinion).  Barack says no to Hillary, yes to Biden.  It's crazy folks...

But I have more to say for those who care.  More to say about why I am not voting for Obama.  I am still working on it and it'll come soon enough.  Until then, check this video out...

You have got to be kidding me.  Is Universalism & Socinianism on the rise?  I think so.  And they are trying to cleverly disguise it.  Pitiful.

More Politics...

The Democrats have proven that morality is important to them and had admittedly made changes to their DNC speaking lineup for last night.

John Edwards had been banned from making a speech because of having an affair and then lying about.

His replacement?

Bill Clinton.

Did I miss something?

Brian McLaren Shills for Pro-Abortion Obama

In this political ad, Brian McLaren says you can learn a lot about a man by how he treats his family. As a so-called pastor, McLaren should also know that you can learn a lot about a man by how he treats babies in the womb. Obama, who virulently defends the right to kill babies in the womb, and who twice voted against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act when babies were being allowed to die on dirty laundry carts after failed abortion attempts, has blood on his hands. That doesn’t stop Brian McLaren and KirbyJon Caldwell from telling us that Obama is a man of character. The fruit of Brian McLaren’s postmodern theology is truly evident here. 50 million dead children can be overlooked as meaningless in the interest of promoting change. Everything must change, says McLaren. Everything but the relentless slaughter of America’s most precious and vulnerable citizens. And God sees it.

Good Books Just a Click Away!

Westminster Bookstore
Here's the deal.  You may have noticed (all 5 of you readers-thanks mom!) a few of these logos (3 to be exact) that are strategically placed on my blog.  There is a reason for this.  The reason is many-fold, but let me start by saying that books are good.  Books help us think.  They help us sit and listen to an author and try to undesrtand where he is coming from.  Books are fun.  They help us get involved in the story.  For me, I hated books.  In fact, I didn't like to even read the newspaper.  Things have changed for me, however, and for some reason, God has changed what I do with books.  I LOVE to read them!  (Be careful Jason, don't make it an idol!).
I want you to consider something.  Whether you like to read or not, you should definitely purchase your books and/or bibles from Westminster's Bookstore.  Why? Because they are cheaper than Amazon.  Because they have an awesome shipping deal with not only UPS, but USPS as well.  Because when you click on these logos, I earn points.  These points then turn into rewards.  These rewards include: free books, gift certificates, etc.  Don't get on here and just click like crazy to try and boost my points (they will know and I will get booted), but please feel free to browse the website, maybe even sign up and add your own wish list, and help me out in the same breathe!  Enjoy!

Courts and Sin.

Part of my job (I would be considered "Bi-Vocational" at this point) involves going to court. I have seen a lot of things during this process, and what really scares me is how the court system tries to "fix" the "broken" persons involved. It's as if they have an "illness" rather than a "condition" like Scripture teaches (Romans 1,2 & 3; cf. Ephesians 2:1-3). Some children simply do not want to go to school. Well, let's put them somewhere where they will go to school, recondition them, and hopefully then they can become productive people in our society. Sometimes I want to scream and yell "IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE SINNERS!".

American liberalism is a disorder that has tapped into all functioning systems in our society and therefore has (in my professional opinion) caused more damage than good. For example. We are legalizing Gay Marriage, which Evangelicals oppose, making Global Warming a huge deal, yet killing 4300 babies a day. I'm not sure what to think anymore. America is a 13 year-old teenager who has ADD, ADHD, OCD and Bi-polar "disease" while on every single medicine from Paxil t0 Ritalin. WHAT!? We got ticked off when 3,000 people died on 9/11 yet we are going to go ahead and allow MORE than that die every single day? We've simply lost our minds and fallen away from Scripture.

The root of the problem is sin (Genesis 3). A part of that root is unbelief. Instead of letting children know why Jesus REALLY died on the Cross, we use that as an "example" and never ask people to repent. We need another Reformation. And we need it now.

Voting a President into office isn't the answer.

I'm going on...

5 days of vacation. See you next week. As Todd Friel says..."Go serve your King".

Until then...

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
