Help! I'm In Babylon...

I'm reading this book by Frost in preparation for my cohort's trip to Italy this May. The basic premise? We are to live as Exiles because that's what we are. Like the Israelites in exile in Babylon, we in the West who are Christ-Followers have found ourselves stuck under the imperial powers that be (America is definitely NOT a 'Christian' Nation; not that it ever was, but you get the idea). We are in a Post-Christendom society and must find ourselves in order to truly 'be' Missional.  Frost spends several chapters unpacking what Exiles "will do" for society at large. We aren't to be identified by a building and overtly structured lifestyles. We aren't to ask how the community can serve us. We don't "build it" and hope 'they' will come. We GO because we are not only told to do so, we do so because that's what exiles do. Exiles spend time in their culture, engage that culture and reflect heavily who Christ is by simply "being". I have to put together a 4-6 page response as it pertains to how I "engaged" the book and honestly, it slammed me. While Frost is heavy with sociology, he brings forth an orthodox yet fluid theology with the goal to be not only biblically faithful, but culturally faithful as well. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to grasp more strongly how we should be "being" the church in our society.

Hrm... an interesting sounding book. Unfortunately, my reading time will be taken up over the next several months with class work.

However, I have the summer to look forward to. This sounds like a book that should be required reading for ALL Christians seriously concerned with living for Christ in our current cultural surroundings. Does it lend itself to small group study, like a Sunday School class or something?

Hey Robert,

Yes EVERYONE should read it and if read appropriately within each person's context, should spur us on to get our Faith lived out correctly.

It could be a good study...not sure it "lends" itself to that, but I think you could make it work. Just break down each chapter (it's over 300 pages btw). For sure put this one on your reading list!
