I'm reading this book by Frost in preparation for my cohort's trip to Italy this May. The basic premise? We are to live as Exiles because that's what we are. Like the Israelites in exile in Babylon, we in the West who are Christ-Followers have found ourselves stuck under the imperial powers that be (America is definitely NOT a 'Christian' Nation; not that it ever was, but you get the idea). We are in a Post-Christendom society and must find ourselves in order to truly 'be' Missional. Frost spends several chapters unpacking what Exiles "will do" for society at large. We aren't to be identified by a building and overtly structured lifestyles. We aren't to ask how the community can serve us. We don't "build it" and hope 'they' will come. We GO because we are not only told to do so, we do so because that's what exiles do. Exiles spend time in their culture, engage that culture and reflect heavily who Christ is by simply "being". I have to put together a 4-6 page response as it pertains to how I "engaged" the book and honestly, it slammed me. While Frost is heavy with sociology, he brings forth an orthodox yet fluid theology with the goal to be not only biblically faithful, but culturally faithful as well. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to grasp more strongly how we should be "being" the church in our society.
